Just thought I would explain my name Supernova, as it has nothing to do with Helicopters.

I am a amateur Astronomer and have been involved with this for a very long time (45 years ish), this has given me a better understanding of the Universe etc, so seem to have got this as a nickname, my Avatar is me with my Astronaught overalls, I have a 16inch Telescope and when I announced this on a Astronomy forum, I got a call from Sir Patrick Moor Saying "what is this I hear you have a bigger telescope than me" and I have made a good friendship with him as he lives not far from me.

So it has stuck Wink Smile

I can do a lot of stuff from my home town here, all the history is still about if you look for it here but the places have been modified a bit.

Yep much the same here, but I am going to the new museum here in Southampton when it opens, the old one was a very small one no bigger than a house, still there but now the maritime museum.

How do I post a pic here ?

They had a show here about the places where they built it, and they said about the same things- it has been  abandoned, and nearly forgoten. It's their failed son, and almost a disgrace in a lot of people, or at least the way they put it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's forgotten on purpose, since it's such a failure in so many of the old timers' eyes. Brought the end of the whole shipbuilding industry there.

There is a resturant somewhere around there that is built around the original woodwork from one of the other Olymic-class ships. Then, there's one last ship left from the whole thing, just an abandoned shuttle boat, rusting away in some harbor.

That little boat's the last of an era, the last White Star ship, and it's just rusting away. A darned shame.

I dont have much of a story to tell really, and my wife also just what I have posted but we do have a pic of the coat hanger heist mastermind with the kitchen staff on his ship.

As for the buildings the main Hotel where the passengers stayed has just been refurbished the luggage store is now a restaurant and the bulk of the crew's houses are now a 2 lane bypass.

The Hotel can be seen in the film behind the ship when it left the dock, the dock had a plaque to mark it but not there now because the public are not allowed in the docks,  it is private.

The event is not remembered in Southampton as it should be, in fact nearly forgotten, the film was half empty on the second night we went to see it.

I think the old walls (1,000 years old)  the churches and the buildings that still stand plus the war damage seems to have more intrest.

Yeah, that is like the basis to a book or something! Throw in the poetic licnce stuff, and you might have something good.

I saw an exibit at the Carnegie Science Center on Titanic, complete with artifacts and everything, and it was very powerful. Really informative on the whole thing, really well done. I wonder how many museums would kill to have that.

Sorted the mug shot Cool and yep the Titanic was crewed from most of Southamptons citizens we are having a new big museum built here to mark 100 years.

We have a coat hanger from the ship my wife's Irish Grandfather ( he was a crew member on the Mauritania )  nicked,  it is marked White Star Line one side and RMS Titanic the other side.

What a fantastic story-you should do a past research on your wifes Grandfather family history, when one has some history like that of the Titanic you must put it down in writing so left for years to come for your family to read.I think the Titanic is one event of history that will be talked about for years to come,I feel honored to have this true event posted on my blog-fantastic-have you ever thought of doing your own blog with the events and history you know about the area you live in,the building of the Titanic, photos of the coat hanger, would interest a lot of people,if you wanted help building the blog let me know.

Wow, I guess it's lucky he didn't get the job on the maiden voyage!

Not like they'd notice a missing clothes hanger, I guess...

I guess that tops everything anybody has done on this forum...

(Closest I have is my great Grandpa's story, from what I can tell from the little we know from before he immigrated to here. He was probably born and raised in the Ukrane, (we know he was Ukranian) made it to Austria at some point, I'm guessing during the Russian revolution about the same time, (whether he was leaving for the poor conditions there, or running away from the revolution, who knows) joined the Austrian Army, got enough money to leave or something, desserted, (the part of desserting the Austrian Army's also one of the few known details) and left with his honey to come here, (we know he did that on a ship from Austria) and lead the mondain life of a Pennsilvainian Soft-Coal miner. The most anti-climactic ending in history.)

I am not selling it, no way, sorry, http://bestsmileys.com/tongs/4.gif the story goes, he was a chef and was invited to look around the Titanic to see if he would like to have a job in the kitchen and thought why not nick a bit of this awesome ship, and looked around the first class cabins then hmmm,

This will go up my coat sleeve, the rest is history.

After the sinking he kept it in my wife's family as his uncle worked on the Ship when it was built in Ireland.

Holly crap!!! That's one of practically no artifacts to have survived not being on it! If you ever wanted to sell it, and got it authenticated, you could probably get a heck of a lot of money! (although, I'm the type of person who'd keep it forever and put antiques insurance on it)

Anyway, no problem figuring out how to do the avatars-- had to do that myself...

(the original photo of the tail on the real huey I painted's freaking huge)
