Should I get one?

I installed the FPV kit.

It does what it says it will do.  It does provide a real time first person view. However,...
-- The picture is not all that great and it "jelloes" some.
-- The camera weighs maybe double what the original camera weighs.  It has its own non-removable battery.
-- The x5c battery gets used up a lot faster, presumably because of the additional weight.  The duration is about a minute less per flight.
-- Probably because of my low skill level, I find it hard to maneuver looking only in FPV.  Hopefully I'll get better at it.
-- If the x5c is allowed to descend more than slowly, it goes into a wobbly descent that needs full power and a couple seconds to arrest.  Again, this may be from the additional weight.  I have to be careful to descend very very slowly or the thing slams into the ground.
-- The microphone on the camera sticks down further than the skids.  I had to put some pads on the skids to keep the mic from scraping on the ground.
-- There is no manual.  You have to figure out how to assemble and use it all by your little ol' self.
-- When you run out of x5c battery (which happens more often now), you have to shut off four switches to shut it all down,.. x5c, control box, FPV screen, and camera.

This is obviously a toy FPV set up, but not very rugged,... nowhere near "prosumer" level equipment.  That said, it will serve well for training,.. a good value even though rather crude.

The new x5c-1 arrived yesterday.  I have flown it about 3 hrs as of 1000 this morning.
It works well.
Four things I don't like about it, though, when compared to the one still in the tree (Aerodrone),...
-- You can't turn off the lights.
-- The props and prop guards are all the same color, white.
-- The camera angle is fixed.
-- The mic is useless.  All you can hear is prop and gear noise.  With the Aerodrone, the props and gears made a lot of noise, but when the drone was hovering within a few feet of a person talking, you could hear the voice.
Is the mic in the x5c in the camera itself?
I wonder if rubber mounting the x5c camera would help any.

I understand why ability to turn the lights off might be desirable.   But I find the x5c's lights, even in broad daylight, aid me in determining and controlling direction.

Personally, I like the all-white colors of the x5c, but this is strictly a matter of individual taste.

Is the Aerodrone's camera movable?  And did you find the x5c's fixed camera positioning negatively affects its performance?

I believe the microphone in the x5c's camera is redundant.  I don't know how a microphone on a quad could possibly be useful above or below the noise and vibration of the props.

Bottom line: Do you feel the Aerodrone overall is superior to the x5c?

I don't know what kind of a load the lights (8 leds) put on the battery, but it must reduce the flying time at least a little, eh?

I painted the outer portion of the rear prop guard green, and the tips of the rear props green,... so now the visuals show green colors on the ass end of the drone to match the green leds.

The Aerodrone's camera is adjustable in elevation.  I liked being to take some pics looking straight down.

The microphones ARE pretty much unusable.  I use them to put a few words on the video before/after the flight.

I feel the x5c-1 is a little superior to the Aerodrone.  It does get about 30 seconds longer flight time with the same batteries.  It seems a bit more stable, but that is pretty hard to quantify -- maybe I am just getting better at it.  I just wish I could turn off the lights, and adjust the camera angle.

The kit for FPV just arrived.  When I get it installed, I'll report back.

GyroBob,

Mine was one of them....well, it was my S32. Hopefully you will

find it. Mine was upside down in a tree for 4 months before I

found it, like the story on here says. There was rainwater in the nose

cone and a family of wood spiders had moved in.

After cleaning it up and relocating the spiders, it works great,

to my surprise, even using the same battery! Again a testiment

to the quality of Syma products! This happened 2 years ago

and still on the same battery. Good luck!

I figured that there are a LOT of these things lost everyday!  I don't feel all that bad because as a beginner, I'm bound to screw up a few times, and I only spent $59 on the thing at Ollie's.
I ordered another one from Amazon that afternoon.
redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
At least this one has some upgrades, and is a genuine x5c rather than the aerodrone version that Ollie's carries.
In several weeks the leaves will be gone and I'll probably be able to see it.
Also, when the new x5c gets here, I can fly it up over the area where the old one is stuck and maybe find out exactly where it is.
If an x5c sits up in a tree for a month or two, what kind of damage might one expect?  Will I be able to use the thing again?,... assuming I can get it down, of course.

GyroBob,

There are at least two messages somewhere in this forum by fellows whose quads were stuck in trees.  In both examples I recall the quads came down with the autumn leaves and, except for some cosmetic effects they flew perfectly after being cleaned and charged up.  So the chances are very good that you'll end up either with two functional x5cs or one plus a parts source.

Gyro, Yeah, it happens.....One of the unfortunate parts of this hobby,

but as MikeK said, don't give up on it. I've seen some REALLY expensive

planes and helis go down into pieces, not to mention the time invested

in building them.

If it's any comfort, I lost an S32 2 years ago this month. I searchedze

all over the neightborhood. No luck. Finally, in October, 2013, I gave up

and bought a new one. In November after the leaves had fallen, my

neighbor spotted it and we got it down. After cleaning my S32 and getting

rid of the spiders that had nested in the nose cone, I took a chance,

charged it, waited the 15 minutes, and still today, she flies beautifully,

even on the same battery that was exposed to the elements for 4 months!

This story is on this forum, BTW.

Hopefully your story will end like this. If not, we just have to accept loosing

an aircraft is part of the hobby. Good luck and I hope you find it.

Never mind.  It is sitting somewhere up in a tree.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Bob.

I know it's no comfort to you but some of the messages in this forum (and elsewhere) leave no doubt that most R/C heli hobbyists pay such unhappy dues early on.  One fellow here has reported having his DJI Phantom ($1,000 quad) dunked in the sea.  Quite a few have been stuck in trees and some are simply lost -- gone.  So I hope this unhappy experience will serve only as a lesson and won't discourage you from continuing in the hobby.

I put some pics in a photobucket folder since I keep getting a "file size too large" message even with something as small as 69kb.

Is this the same as an x5c?

Hi to the forum GyroBob great to have you onboard.

The Aerodrone quadcopter looks more like the Syma X6 Review here

Not sure why you can not attach photos-will check-- maybe try getting link from flicker etc

Will go into the system to see if there is a problem with photos, trying one now

HI,

I'm a newbie here.

I bought an Aerodrone quadcopter.   I think it is the same as a Syma x5c.  Can any of your Syma experts verify that?

The controller looks a little different, but it appears the controls work very similarly to the x5c.

I have flown it maybe ten times so far.  It works well.

I've ordered a spare parts kit and a set of batteries with a charger.  That kind of stuff is dirt cheap on Bang Good, eh?

I'd attach some pics, but when I try to upload attachments, even as small as 69kb is says the file size is too large.

JamDJ,

Without any hesitation buy the Syma X5 it is truly the best fun to fly and extremely stable, the onboard camera is not bad for the price

and will get you into some aerial photography. Link here to a cool looking black and red X5C, you will not be let down on this quad. Also buy some extra batteries you will need them. i bought some upgraded ones from Banggood but they are thicker than original ones and a bit of a fiddle to fit. Here is a link to original battery

Above all fly her hard she will take a lot of punishment 2lbkos0

Hey TeamS107,

I found myself with a small Amazon gift card and a huge

desire to put it toward the X5C....I think I'm the only one

on here that doesn't own one (and I'm an admin?)

Are you guys having fun with yours? Please reply!

Also, speaking of quads....thank you SF for getting

my S6 review on the home page with the cool edits.

JamDJ,

To answer your question, I'm having fun with my x5c every day (when it doesn't rain).  As I recall you said you presently are an S-107 enthusiast, which is quite understandable.  I had tried my luck with a couple of helicopters which I just couldn't get along with, but the S-107 was the first and only one I was able to fly.

Then I watched a YouTube video of the x5c and was impressed.  So I ordered one and I can assure you when yours arrives you will be more than glad you got it.  It truly is a wonderful machine, beautifully made, very stable, and a pleasure to fly -- indoors or out.
