Would I buy the Syma X5C

Yes definitely, Please read my detailed review below, also some videos from Youtube that shows a fix on remote antenna for more distance as out of the box you get around 50 meters according to Syma, which is ok, but I like tweaking a quad like this for fun. Realize any mods you do will void the warranty where you bought from, to be honest She flies well straight out of the box and I get over 70 meters.

I really like the Syma X5c as it does look good, in fact has a DJI Phantom look about it which I do have, but put it into the Pacific sea trying to show off- it happens.

November 28th Upgrade of review of the Syma X5c

I have flown the X5c for a few weeks now and all in all really impressed with the performance.

Good And Bad Points.

The Syma X5c arrives out of the box pretty well set up, the only things to do are to charge the battery with supplied usb charger and also to attach the flying guards which is easy as Syma supply a screw driver to do the job. You also get in the box spare set of blades and a usb micro card holder to load your videos to your computer.

To bind the quad to the remote (transmitter) first turn on remote then the SymaX5c you will see rapid lights under the quad, wait until they slow down, then push throttle up and back down again, a bleep will then sound telling you quad is armed and ready to fly. Photo below will show you flip button to do a complete flip of the quad, you need to push your right stick control to right or left just as you press flip button depending which way you want the quad to flip.

I found the controller a little budget but does the job ok. Click to enlarge.

The camera is ok bearing in mind the cost of the quad. I found the battery compartment under the camera a fiddle to open and a little weak connection pushing back in place after changing battery, there are two screws required if you desire to take the camera off the quad, I might try that and put my mobious camera there instead, might be to heavy. Flying time was decreased when the camera was on for complete flight.

The ability to change mode flying from high to low is a great option for a beginner. I find this a really stable quad considering there is no GPS, sure if you are going forward or sideways it will drift until you correct the movement on the rudder stick all non GPS quads do that.

I guess would like to have seen brushless motors, but hey we are looking at a quad for a price well under $65 . Parts seem cheap, check HERE

As for the battery which is a 3.7v 500mAh standard battery get around 7 minutes flying time without using the camera, drops to around 5 minutes if you have the camera on all the time flying. There are some upgrade batteries for 600mAh, but only found may be 2 minutes extra time use. I bought a good pack of four via Amazon including a pack to charge all at the same time via a usb port- link here to purchase pic below to show you

They are a bit fatter than original battery and I had to take off the cover plastic from the battery to fit into the X5c, bit of a pain, original battery has come down in price link here.

Round up on the Syma X5c

Yes to me 8 out of 10 buy it. As you know I do knock the bigger Syma helis but the X5C is fun, stable and great for a beginner to a fast flyer, next will try fpv on this bird, stay tuned in. I tried a mod on the camera as it points down a bit and thought better flat, however doing that caused the props to give a flicker effect in the sun to the camera, so not a great idea.

A few extra flying tips to mention.

You have the ability to change from Mode 1 to Mode 2 and back again, this does however still keep throttle on the left stick. To do this have the transmitter turned off, hold the tuner button found under the right stick to the right, push to the right and hold there then turn on the transmitter. Once it's turned on (it beeps) you will then see on the remote screen top left either Mode 2 or Mode 1 which ever you changed from on the screen.

Now what that does is .. throttle still the same but when you push the throttle to the left or right on mode 2 will yaw left or right and the right hand stick control will spin the quad, to me horrible as like to fly the X5c in mode 1 but at least you have the choice to change it and easy to test and turn mode back doing the same method above to suit the best mode for you. Also just a point the Syma remote is not like say a spektrum remote which mode 1 has throttle on the right and mode 2 throttle on the left, this is Syma's own remote and maybe the wording should be different.  Click on photo to enlarge
