Hey JBRumberg,I know how you feel about early morning or late evening flying. The air is like silk and the plane just glides.I flew like that for about a year with a Syma 107 and a Syma 800.Somewhere I ran on to the Syma X1.It looked interesting and I was getting tired of basically flying away and back or doing the same things every time I flew. What the heck.It wasn't expensive so I ordered one and the adventure began.
No more just flying around or back and forth. It's hard to describe how a quad copter changed everything. It's like starting to take flying lessons. You think things work like they look when others do it but when you do it somehow it's OMG.That's the best way to describe my experience with a quad.To start is opening a new door and it is exciting.Every time out is like soloing by yourself in flight training.
Well, that's the way I feel.I love to fly but radio control is a lot cheaper and you don't need a medical. At my age I'm having a ball flying the X1 and waiting for golfing to start. Then, it's more fun than one person should have.Oh well,I'll just suffer on.Someone has to do it.
I have seen discussion about using "CorrosionX" on the ESC's, etc. of RC seaplanes.
There's always seems to be a breeze around my location, but every now and then at dusk/early mornings that it appears calm enough to fly my S107G's outside. It can get real cold aound here, but with those 5 minute flight times (I fly off my deck.) I do not think that it ever gets cold enough long enough to "brittle up" the plastic cowlings of the heli's. So far they have held up to a couple of snow, ice, and "wet" landings. (Snow is preferable ). Following these landings I idle up the heli's for a moment or two to dry off. I have also used my wife's hair dryer for suspected moisture.
This discussion of the X1 and its capabilities is getting me intereted.... That is not a good thing and
Update on Winter Flying:Winter is hard to find calm air so I've been experimenting with different wind speeds. To date the most wind I've flown in has been 10mph.High speed on the X1 will let you fly but be careful. You can rise faster than a speeding bullet. You can get a slide going that looks like a rocket and you have about as much control.
I find it amazing that a quad so light weight can handle 10mph wind. The only modification I'm using is a larger battery than the original.Today I used a nano-tech0.95 950 mAh that weighs 24 grams. The original battery supplied with the X1 weighs 11 grams 350 mAh.The added weight helps.I think.
Lew803 I enjoy your comedy on your posts "but at least you can get out there and terrorize the birds and a skunk who wandered through one evening.Good Flying" SF

The Syma X1 never ceases to amaze me.I flew helis before and that was no wind. The X1 will fly in moderate wind if you click High .I flew today in a 4to5 mph puffy wind without incident. With no weight ,to speak of, that quad moves. The only thing that I noticed right away was that my fingers don't know slow from fast.My eyes say move and the fingers want to wait and see what's going to happen.Must be age related.
Temps here have been in the 20°F range a lot and I've been able to keep on flying.Plastic shrinks you will notice and fly time is reduced but at least you can get out there and terrorize the birds and a skunk who wandered through one evening.Good Flying
A suggestion if you're going to fly in the snow.I find that a plastic cap for the bottom of the conrol panel on my X1 quad is a great deterrent to moisture causing problems.I cut a plastic circle and attached it to the frame and everything on the panel is now protected.Fliers might want to carry a brush with them. You'll see why if you hit the snow.Still enjoy getting outside but the 107 and 800 are kept busy when the wind is up.
Yeah, you guys might have gotten us here in South West PA today, but I can assure you, this isn't the best time for outdoor helis. Great time of year for the little guys--big outdoor helis in summer, s107's and friends in winter. This area sure gets wacky winters--one year it'll be like it's Portland Oregon where it's just terential rain, the next will be dry as can be with a HUGE storm around Valentine's Day.
Look at it this way, though, as long as your electronics are protected, you have something soft to crash on this time of year.
Weather in OhioUSA is going to winter.Cold and heavy air.Watch your battery and flying time.Your fingers may give you a hint.I flew today at 22F.No problems but I was wary of the snow on landings off the pad I used to launch.Mornings and late evenings seem to be the best times since the wind is down.Cold air is funny and different but you can fly.For me that is what it's all about.
